Before composites became commonplace and before canards became synonymous with some of the most distinctive homebuilt aircraft ever created, there was the VariEze.

Designed by legendary aircraft designer Burt Rutan and first flown in 1975, the VariEze challenged nearly every convention of the light-aircraft world. Its unmistakable canard configuration, swept wings, composite construction and pusher engine weren’t simply chosen to look different—they were part of Rutan’s relentless pursuit of efficiency, performance and innovation.

The VariEze demonstrated that a relatively modest engine and a radically efficient airframe could produce remarkable cross-country performance. More importantly, it helped usher composite construction into the experimental-aircraft mainstream and established the design philosophy that would define the Rutan Aircraft Factory and eventually influence aircraft ranging from the Long-EZ to Voyager and SpaceShipOne.

This shirt pays tribute to that experimental spirit. The front carries the classic RAF — Rutan Aircraft Factory treatment, while the back features three-view VariEze artwork reminiscent of the drawings that inspired builders to turn foam, fiberglass and determination into airplanes.
